420 Development Team (ages 13-18)
November 3, 2019

Our 420 Development Team is a precursor to our 420 Race Team, and is a great step towards higher level racing. Concepts covered in the 420 Development program include upwind, downwind and reaching tactical strategies; proficient roll tacking and gibing; proficient spinnaker and trapeze work; advanced boat handling; acceleration techniques; and an introduction to team racing. Previous sailing instruction at NCS is a prerequisite. The class is conducted in a way that emphasizes team participation and coherence, and all team members are encouraged to participate on the team for as many weeks as possible, with a minimum required commitment of two weeks. The NCS Assistant Race Coach oversees the Development team with support and oversight from the Head 420 Race Coach.

The 420 Development Class will meet Monday - Friday afternoons from 1:00 PM-5:00 PM. On occasion, the 420 Race Coach may cancel practice due to weather or move the class inside for extended chalk talks. On Wednesday afternoons, students will compete in the All-Island Race Day alongside 420 Racers from the Nantucket Yacht Club and Great Harbor Yacht Club. Other on-island events include two Saturday Race Days at NYC (dates TBD) and Nantucket Race Week in August, which the 420 Development and Race Team members are expected to participate in. Finally, we recommend six consecutive weeks of participation on this team during the summer months. The 420 Development Team works toward attending a single off-island regatta towards the end of summer. More information about this opportunity will be made available this spring.

NEW OPPORTUNITY!! 420 Race Team Sailors are invited to participate in Wednesday Night PHRF Racing on our J105. Wednesday Night PHRF Racing takes place throughout the summer from 4:30 PM-8:30 PM. Sailors interested in sailing on Wednesday nights should email Assistant Program Director, Emily Pelo at epelo@nantucketsailing.org. Sailors participating in Wednesday night racing will be transported by coaches directly to the J105.

Mark your calendars: Sailors will also be asked to help with 420 Race Boat Decommissioning (boat breakdown) the week following Nantucket Race Week.
