NCS Program Details
Water Sports (ages 7-12)
November 10, 2015
Water sports offers an alternative to sailing lessons at the Jetties Sailing Center and is intended for students, ages 7 to 12 years, who are interested in challenging themselves with a variety of water-based activities. These include sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, beach games and adventures, and working with marine educators to learn about local marine life.
Paddleboarding and kayaking activities specifically include distance paddles to Brant Point, slalom courses, capture the flag (and other creative games!) on paddleboards/kayaks and paddleboard yoga. Sailing activities include "taste-testing" the NCS fleet. Once a week the class will also work with a marine educator from the Maria Mitchell Association to perform a "beach comb" using seine nets and touch tanks to learn more about Nantucket's coastline and shore life.
Students are encouraged to bring a snack and water bottle in addition to normal beach, swimming and sailing gear. We ask that students wear appropriate shoes (closed toe) when participating in Water Sports, Native Footware, Keen, Crocs, old sneakers all work well. While life jackets are provided and required when on the water, each NCS student should be comfortable in and around the water and have the basic swimming skills.
Water Sports meets Monday - Friday from 9:30am - 12:00pm for nine one-week sessions.
On Fridays, we ask that sailors pack a lunch for our picnic sail in Rhodes 19s to Coatue or out on our J105!
Water Sports class is also offered in single-day enrollments. For $77/day, this is the only NCS class that offers students the opportunity to join us for a single, or multiple, days without committing to the whole week.
