Whalers (ages 7-10)
November 2, 2015

Students who are brand new to sailing or have little prior sailing experience, are placed in our Whalers class. This class, taught in a variety of boats including the RS Quests and Rhodes 19, allows students to learn the basics of sailing.

Starting off in the RS Quest, students will first learn to sail alongside ~3 peers and an instructor. This "bigger" boat experience will provide a comfortable environment for basic skill acquisition. After mastering the basic sailing skills, boat parts, points of sail, water safety, seamanship and sportsmanship, students will progress into sailing more independently with their peers and being coached by an instructor in a motorboat alongside. An emphasis will be placed on learning, safety and fun! Ages: Whalers is intended for beginning sailors ages 7-10 years old. Whalers students must have completed first grade. If your sailor is a beginning sailor and older than 10, he/she should sign up for Opti Green.

Students in the Whalers class have the benefit of close peer and instructor interaction in safe, stable boats. On the first day of each new session, students will have a basic swim check. While life jackets are provided and required when on the water, each NCS student should be comfortable in and around the water and have basic swimming skills. When the student's individual instructor, as well as the lead instructor of the Whalers class, feels that the student understands the rudiments of sailing and can handle a tiller and main sail on their own, the student is invited to move into the Opti Green class.

The Whalers Class is held at Polpis Harbor Monday - Friday mornings from 9:15 am -11:45 am and Monday - Friday afternoons from 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm. There will be no programs on the day of the Coffin Cup. You must register for the Coffin Cup separately. We ask that students wear appropriate shoes (closed-toe) when participating in the Whalers program. Native Footware, Keen, Crocs, old sneakers all work well.

Please note: NCS recommends four weeks of Whalers programming for students to excel through the curricula.
