Nantucket Community Sailing Adult Programs

Nantucket Community Sailing offers a number of opportunities for adults to learn to sail. Similar to our youth programs, the focus is kept on fundamental sailing skills, basic boat care, water safety, and an appreciation for the sport of sailing.  These can be accomplished through private lessons, group lessons, or the Women's Sailing Clinic.  For those students who are more advanced, Jetties Sailing Center offers Open Sailing opportunities.  Available boats generally include Rhodes 19s, Sunfish, Lasers, and Marshall Cats.

Adult Private Lessons at Jetties Sailing Center
Private lesson are offered for two-hour sessions, seven days a week, rain or shine, at the Jetties Sailing Center.  Students who are interested in open sailing opportunities are encouraged to polish their skills through private lessons.  Instruction may include basic sailing concepts or more advanced racing skills, depending on the interests and ability level of the student.  Please call the Jetties Sailing Center directly at 508-228-5358 to schedule an adult private lesson.

Adult Group Lessons at Jetties Sailing Center
Group lessons include three, two-hour lessons scheduled over a two-week period. Lessons may include both on and off the water instruction, and are offered Monday through Friday, rain or shine.  Please call the Jetties Sailing Center directly at 508-228-5358 to schedule an adult group lesson.

Adult Introduction to Keelboat Sailing at Jetties Sailing Center

For adults interested in learning the basics involved with sailing on a larger keelboat, NCS will be offering Adult Sailing Sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1pm-4pm. Space is limited to only five sailors per session.

Private Lessons on the J/105 are also offered by reservation throughout the summer; weather permitting, for two-hour sessions at the Jetties Beach Sailing Center.

Women's Sailing Clinic

The Women's Sailing Clinic is designed to specifically give adult women, of all levels, the opportunity to learn to sail or refine previous sailing skills at the Jetties Sailing Center.  The focus is on teaching and reviewing the fundamentals, as well as an introduction to basic racing concepts.  Building confidence and ensuring that students are comfortable key goals.  Classes are taught primarily in Rhodes 19s or Marshall 15s with an instructor and 2-3 students on each boat. Our 34' J-105 keelboat will be used, when available, for instruction as well. The pace of the class differs between groups of students, with a review of the basics covered each week, if necessary.

The clinic meets Tuesday evening, rain or shine, from 6pm-8pm from June 23rd to August 18th.  (No Class August 11th*)  Due to the high demand of Women's Clinic last year and the limited space available, we will be running the registration a little differently for our 2009 season.  Registration to submit your name for a Tuesday evening Women's Clinic will begin the Wednesday before the actual clinic date.  (I.e. to register for our first Woman's Clinic on June 23rd, you may call the NCS office starting June 17th)  Registration will close at 4pm the Monday before Women's Clinic is scheduled.  If a clinic is "filled" NCS will take names for a Wait List and will contact people either the Monday before or the morning of the Tuesday evening Clinic.

As always, Woman's Clinic is based on a first come first serve basis.  We ask that you complete your registration and submit the completed forms and payment to the NCS main office (4 Winter Street, Nantucket MA 02554) as early as possible.  You only need to complete a registration form once and leave a credit card on file if you plan to attend more than one week's Clinic.  Your credit card will be charged when you call the main office to register for the upcoming week.  You may cancel your enrollment until 12:00pm on the Tuesday of Women's Clinic.  If you do not cancel and do not attend the Clinic, your credit card will still be charged.  If you have questions or wish to register, please contact us at 508-228-6600.

*There is no Women's Clinic on August 11, 2009, due to Nantucket Race Week.  New this year will be a Women's Fun Sail as a part of Nantucket Race Week on Tuesday August 11, 2009.  This event is not included in the NCS Women's Clinic Registration or Membership.  More on how to register for this event will be coming soon.
