Nantucket Community Sailing Adult Programs

Nantucket Community Sailing offers a number of opportunities for adults to learn to sail. Similar to our youth programs, the focus is kept on fundamental sailing skills, basic boat care, water safety, and an appreciation for the sport of sailing.  These can be accomplished through private lessons, group lessons, or the Women's Sailing Clinic.  For those students who are more advanced, Jetties Sailing Center offers Open Sailing opportunities.  Available boats generally include Rhodes 19s, Sunfish, Lasers, and Marshall Cats. The Jetties Sailing Center is scheduled to open June 21, 2010.

Adult Private Lessons at Jetties Sailing Center
Private lesson are offered for two-hour sessions, seven days a week, rain or shine, at the Jetties Sailing Center.  Students who are interested in open sailing opportunities are encouraged to polish their skills through private lessons.  Instruction may include basic sailing concepts or more advanced racing skills, depending on the interests and ability level of the student.  Please call the Jetties Sailing Center directly at 508-228-5358 to schedule an adult private lesson.

Adult Private Lessons at Polpis Harbor
Adult (age 18 and over) private lessons are offered in Rhodes 19s or Marshall Cat 15s, or an equivalent boat, at Polpis Harbor every Monday through Friday from 9:30-11:30am and 1:15-3:15pm, depending on availability. Adults intrested in private lessons do not need to have prior sailing experience. Adult lessons at Polpis are specifically intended for the parents of our Polpis students. Reservations for lessons can be made through the NCS Office at 508 228 6600, and not at our Polpis Harbor location.

Adult Group Lessons at Jetties Sailing Center
Group lessons include three, two-hour lessons scheduled over a two-week period. Lessons may include both on and off the water instruction, and are offered Monday through Friday, rain or shine.  Please call the Jetties Sailing Center directly at 508-228-5358 to schedule an adult group lesson.

Adult Introduction to Keelboat Sailing at Jetties Sailing Center

For adults interested in learning the basics involved with sailing on a larger keelboat, NCS will be offering Adult Sailing Sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1pm-. Space is limited to only five sailors per session.

Private Lessons on the J/105 are also offered by reservation throughout the summer; weather permitting, for two-hour sessions at the Jetties Beach Sailing Center.

Women's Sailing Clinic

The Women's Sailing Clinic is designed to specifically give adult women, of all levels, the opportunity to learn to sail or to refine previous sailing skills at the Jetties Sailing Center.  A focus is placed on teaching and reviewing the fundamentals, as well as Introducing students to the basics of racing. Key goals of the class include building confidence and ensuring that students are comfortable on the water.  Classes are taught primarily in Rhodes 19s or Marshall 15s with an instructor and 2-3 students on each boat. Our 34' J-105 keelboat will be used, when available, for instruction as well.  In case of foul weather there will be a "chalk-talk" and on-land instruction will still take place.

Beginning in 2010, thanks to popular demand, NCS will aim to offer a Women's Clinic on every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 5:30pm - 7:30pm from June 29nd to August 19th, rain or shine. (No Class on August 10th and 12th) The Tuesday night clinic will be oriented towards introductory sailing concepts and is intended for our beginner sailors, or those sailors who may be looking to enjoy a more recreational approach to sailing. The Thursday night clinic will be oriented towards more advanced sailing concepts and beginner racing techniques and is intended for those students who may be looking to "take the next step." The Womens Clinic has limited space available. Registration for a Tuesday or Thursday evening Women's Clinic will be available throught the adult program registration page. If a clinic is "filled" NCS will take names for a Wait List and will contact people either the day before or the morning of the evening's clinic.

As always, Women's Clinic is based on a first come first serve basis.  We ask that you complete your registration and submit the completed forms and payment either online or at the NCS main office (4 Winter Street, Nantucket MA 02554) as early as possible.  Should you need to cancel your enrollment for a clinic, you must do so at least 24hrs before the clinic is scheduled to take place.  If you do not cancel and do not attend the clinic, your will still be responsible for the clinic's fee.  There are no refunds issued due to inclement weather.  If you have questions please contact us at 508-228-6600.

*There is no Women's Clinic on August 10th and 12th, 2010, due to Nantucket Race Week.  Continuing after last years success there will be a Women's Fun Sail as a part of Nantucket Race Week on Tuesday August 10, 2010.  This event is not included in the NCS Women's Clinic Registration or Membership.  More on how to register for this event will be coming soon.
